Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, sadly never met her mother-in-law but as 2017 draws to a close Express.co.uk takes a look at how she has followed in Princess Diana’s footsteps.
The Duchess of Cambridge has continued to pay sartorial tribute to her husband’s late mother during a busy year of royal engagements.
Most recently, Kate paid tribute to Prince William’s late mother with a secret nod in her family’s Royal Christmas card.
For the posed portrait, the 33-year-old chose to wear a pale blue skirt by Catherine Walker – one of Diana’s favorite designers, and credit for many of the princess’ perfectly tailored outfits.
But the subtle tribute did not stop there – because Diana loved wearing blue skirt suits, and wore a similar design to Kate’s back in 1988 and 1997, both designed by Walker.
And Kate continues to subtly pay tribute to Princess Diana at major events.
The iconic women both received the same engagement ring, but Kate pays homage to the people’s princess by donning her iconic tiara, the Cambridge Lover’s Knot.
The Duchess last donned Princess Diana’s favourite tiara on December 6 to the diplomatic reception at Buckingham Palace.
Kate paired the tiara with pearl drop earrings and a diamond necklace.

The Cambridge Lover’s Knot is an heirloom that’s been passed down through the generations having been commissioned originally by Queen Mary, wife of George V and our Queen’s grandmother, in 1914.
Pregnant with her third child, Kate has really thrown herself into motherhood.
And like Princess Diana, it appears Kate recognises the importance of being a hands-on mother, whether it be travelling with her and William’s children on royal duties or keeping unruly Prince George in line at her sister Pippa’s wedding.
Kate, like Diana, has also made helping others a number one priority when becoming a royal.
Princess Diana put HIV/AIDs in to the spotlight, famously pictured shaking hands with a patient in a London hospital.
And now Kate has joined forces with her husband Prince William and brother-in-law Harry to raise awareness of mental health, with their charity Heads Together.
The Duchess is the brainchild behind the campaign, with William recently saying: “It was Catherine who first realised that all three of us were working on mental health in our individual areas of focus”.
Aside from her charity work drawing parallels with her late mother-in-law, Kate also mirrors Princess Diana during public engagements.
When you become the most photographed woman in the world, it has hard not to quickly learn how to sit for the cameras.
Kate has mastered the “duchess slant” just like her late mother-in-law.
Married to heirs to the throne, both women instantly became style icons and have worn similar trends – even decades apart.
Princess Diana’s style had the world captivated as she continuously broke the boundaries, while Kate tends to see everything she wears sell out in a snap.
