A persistent cough can be very irritating and annoying. Whenever you deal with this problem, you probably reach for over the counter medicine. These drugs are full of chemicals and can cause many side-effects. Moreover, the medications only solve this issue temporarily.
There is an excellent cough remedy which you can prepare at home. This remedy can solve your persistent cough and won’t cause any harmful effects. These cough drops will also help you prevent a cough and flu and they will boost your immune system. Additionally, they will heal a sore throat and help many other ailments.
Cough Sweets Recipe
- ½ tsp of ground ginger
- 1 cup of sugar
- ½ cup of water
- ¼ of a spoon of ground cloves
- 1 tbsp of honey
- 1 tbsp of lemon juice
Take a pan and add the sugar and the water into it. Then, add the lemon juice, the honey, and the ginger. In the end, add ground cloves. Turn the heat on and stir well. When it starts to simmer, stir again and lower the heat. Then, leave it simmering for about 15-20 minutes, making sure you stir it regularly.

While the ingredients are simmering, line a baking tray with a baking paper. After 15-20 minutes, take the pan off the heat and leave it to cool down. The mixture should be thick and dark. Use a spoon to put the syrupy mixture on the tray.
When you place the mixture on the tray, let them cool down for 20 minutes and cover them with a dusting of powdered icing sugar. This will prevent them from sticking. Take them off the paper and make sure they all are well coated.
The sweets are ready! Put them in your mouth and let them dissolve slowly. Optionally, add several of the sweets into a cup of hot water, let them dissolve and consume it as a drink.

Ginger is very beneficial for many ailments and a great immune system booster. It has anti-inflammatory properties and helps soothe the pain and nausea.
Honey is rich in antibacterial properties. It cleans the body from bacteria, soothes a sore throat and relieves a persistent cough.
Ground cloves are packed with antiseptic properties and antioxidants. They will help you reduce phlegm. In case you don’t have ground cloves, you can take dry ones and crush them yourselves.
