As you play Pokémon Go, you quickly realise increasing your Trainer Level allows you to encounter Pokémon at higher CP levels – helpful for raising a powerful squad to take on Gyms – and that it increases your chances of discovering rarer Pokémon out in the wild.
Each new level also gives you a number of items – such as Incubators, handy for hatching 2km, 5km and 10km Eggs – and at certain key points, you can unlock more powerful items that’ll start appearing from PokéStops from that point onward.
So if you want your hands on higher level and rarer Pokémon – as well as access to powerful Great Balls and Ultra Balls, Super Potions and more – then start getting XP.
If you want to find out the many ways you can get experience, as well as a speedy way to earn 60,000 XP in 30 minutes, which is particularly helpful as you reach the 20s – then be sure to read our how to get XP fast in Pokémon Go page. Playing each day will also get you a Pokémon Go Daily Bonus, whereby you receive bonus XP for your first catch of the day, and much more if you catch creatures seven days in a row.
Pokémon Go level rewards list
The following table breaks down how much experience is required to reach the next level, the total amount of XP required to reach that level from the start of the game (which, as you can see from level 20 onwards, gets progressively more demanding, and towards the level cap, requires millions to level up each time), the items you receive and the items you unlock that can then start appearing at PokéStops.
Thanks to The Silph Road Reddit and datamining efforts (as seen on Github) for the breakdown of the below.
Note after the Gen 2 update, new Berries have been added as level rewards. According to findings on Reddit, odd numbers alternate between Nanab and Pinap Berries from level 21 onwards.
We’ll update this in the coming days, but in short, when you level, expect some Berries as part of the bargain.

When do you unlock item rewards in Pokémon Go as you level up?
The above table explains what you get at each level – both in terms of individual items and when certain items unlock and become regularly available at PokéStops – but here’s the list at a glance:
Level 5: Gyms, Potions, Revives
Level 8: Razz Berry
Level 10: Super Potion
Level 12: Great Ball
Level 15: Hyper Potion
Level 20: Ultra Ball
Level 25: Max Potion
Level 30: Max Revive
What is the level cap in Pokémon Go, and what happens when you reach it?
Thanks to datamining, not only did we first learn about the (since-confirmed!) things like Legendary Pokémon in Pokémon Go, but we know that there is a Trainer level cap in Pokémon Go of level 40, and the amount of XP required to takes to get there. As you can see the above table, the amount required from level 20 onwards starts to become more and more demanding.
While it’s taking many users some time to make their way towards the cap, someone’s already hit Level 40 with the use of a script that automatically hoovers up Pokemon without any manual input, and the use of many Lucky Eggs to speed up the process. (If you want to do it without the use of external tools, be sure to read our how to get XP fast in Pokémon Go tips for the fastest way there.)
What happens when you hit max level? Outside of a handful of items – 40 Ultra Balls, Max Potions, Max Revives, Razz Berries, plus four Incense, Lucky Eggs, Incubators and Lure Modules – not a lot. With the existence of a Master Ball confirmed, some have speculated that this will be provided in the later ranks, but seemingly not. Of course, Pokemon Go is a game that’s set to last for years, so perhaps we’ll see more fruitful rewards – and new level caps – in time.
