The chance to catch Pokémon Go’s Mew will be completely different to every other creature we’ve seen in the game so far.The game’s first Mythical Pokémon will be available as part of a Special Research quest, where players must complete a series of objectives as part of a story-based questline.
How Mew event ‘A Mythical Discovery’ will work in Pokémon Go
As part of a March 2018 update, Pokémon Go will introduce new Research quests, where players complete objectives for special rewards.
There are two types of these quests – Field Research and Special Research. It’s this latter type we’ll be focusing on, as where Field Research offers objectives that can be collected by players at any time, Special Research is a story-driven questline with specific steps.
The first Special Research quest is named ‘A Mythical Discovery’, and will see Professor Willow “take Trainers further into the world of Pokémon Go than ever before!”, according to Niantic.
At at the end? Players will be given Mew as a reward for its completion.
What we know so far is the following:
The quest will be broken down into eight stages, with multiple challenges to complete per stage.
The story will feature Professor Willow, who will be animated in 3D for the first time, with happy, sympathetic, energetic and impatient animations, according to a code breakdown by The Silph Road. In short – expect cut scenes.
There will be a special badge to unlock for when you finally encounter Mew.
What we don’t know:
Whether the steps can be completed in quick succession, or if Niantic will slow the quest to progress over a period of days, weeks or months. They could require a 7-day streak or completion of a Research Breakthrough, for example, both of which require a week to complete.
How the Mew encounter itself will play out, whether there will be a battle or if you simply have to catch the creature. It’s suspected the capture screen will initiate as soon as it occurs in the story – similar to how Raid battles end – and won’t appear on the map.
How Mew can be used. Legendary Pokémon cannot be inserted into gyms, for example, and it’s currently unknown whether Mythical Pokémon like Mew will follow suit.
The complete set of rewards. Each step within a stage looks to offer XP, but it appears there are more rewards on offer for overall completion.
