Pokemon Go NEWS: Niantic faces HUGE Pokemon Trading Card rival on smartphones

POKEMON Go might be joined by another Pokemon game on iOS and Android, as Pokemon Company expands its smartphone business.

Pokemon Go could have a big new rival on its hand if the latest rumours are to be believed.

The Pokemon Company is reportedly working on a new Pokemon smartphone game, which would give Pokemon Go a run for its money.

That’s according to a new report in the Wall Street Journal, which also broke the news about The Legend of Zelda smartphone game.

The article reads: “Pokemon Co. is planning a new card-game app, two people familiar with the matter said.

“Pokemon Co. already makes physical cards that players collect and use in competitions.”

The new Pokemon smartphone app could be a variation of the Pokemon Trading Card Game Online available for tablets.

The app gives players the chance to collect cards, build decks and battle against other players.

The last big Pokemon Company release was Pokemon Duel, which can be seen in the gallery below…

The news comes just days after Niantic revealed stats for the Worldwide Bloom Grass Event.

According to Niantic, members of the blue team caught the most Grass Pokemon during the short-lived event.

“Congratulations, TeamMystic! You caught the most Grass-type Pokémon last weekend. You’ll get them next time, TeamValor and TeamInstinct,” reads a Niantic tweet.

Team Mystic caught 116 million Grass-type Pokemon during the event, compared to 102 million for Team Valor (red) and just 72 million for Team Instinct (yellow).

While that’s a combined 290 million Grass-type Pokemon for the entirety of the event, it does seem low compared to the Water Festival, for example.

Fans caught a whopping 589 million Magikarp during the Water Festival, although that did last for a week.

But even so, that’s 589 million for a single Pokemon, compared to 290 million for an entire type of Pokemon.
