You Have A Very Limited Time To Catch A Shiny Ho-oh This Weekend In ‘Pokémon GO’

I’ve sort of forgotten that it’s Johto Week in Pokémon GO, which has increased the spawns of Johto Pokémon which should help to some degree with the current Celebi quest. But Niantic has announced one more bonus for the week, the chance to catch Ho-oh this weekend for the first time in a long while, and to also possibly snag a shiny version.

You have a very limited time to do this, as Ho-oh will only be appearing today and tomorrow, as this ends on Monday, August 27. Possibly right at midnight, or perhaps a little late, but I would definitely try to do all your catching this weekend to be safe.

To be clear, this is not something like the recent Articuno/Zapdos events where for three hours, every single gym was taken over by those birds as a reward for GO’s live event challenges. Rather, this is more similar to what Niantic did with Lugia a while ago, spawning it for a short spell as a “normal” legendary raid to join the ones that are already live (that should be Regirock, in this case).

As such, you are going to have your work cut out for you trying to land a shiny, as presumably you’re just not going to have that many chances at once. I don’t know exactly what the shiny spawn rate is for a limited weekend event like this, but I think it’s probably around the usual of 3-5%, meaning 1 in 20 or 30 catches might get you that shiny Ho-oh. But hey, I guess it’s better than a zero percent chance with Ho-oh not usually being around at all.

There’s kind of a cool lore interaction here, where Ho-oh is responsible for the Legendary Beasts, and those have now turned into research rewards as of late, so this ties directly into that. I’m not sure if Niantic did that on purpose, but it’s a cool connection all the same.

As for taking down Ho-oh, your best bets for taking down the fire/flying type quick are:

  • Tyranitar
  • Golem
  • Kyogre
  • Omastar

And you might also consider:

  • Zapdos
  • Raikou
  • Gyarados
  • Rayquaza

Throw in some other rock/electric/water types in there and you’ve got yourself a solid raiding team. Ho-oh is not the hardest legendary to beat or catch, and hopefully you are now stronger than when you first took him on a while ago.

Obviously you’re going to try to land that shiny, but it’s also great if you get a high IV one with a fast fire move.

So, good luck catching yourself Ho-oh in the next two days. I’ll try to get some data on shiny spawn rates soon here.
