How to Make Honey Remedies to Help You Fall Asleep Naturally

If you have problems sleeping, and you spend half of the night tossing and turning trying to fall asleep, and end up exhausted in the morning, you need to find a way to fall asleep easily and get the needed rest. Moreover, do you wake up during the night?

This is a sign that glucose levels in the body dropped and this triggered a stress response in the brain. However, before you reach for some medications, you should try to solve the issue in a natural way.

There is a possibility that honey can be used as a cheap, highly effective, and safe sleep aid. Despite its countless medicinal properties, honey is a potent natural remedy for insomnia.

People have used it as a natural remedy for millennia, and Chinese still believe in and practice the popular “eating honey every night”. Moreover, since the Middle Ages, Europeans have used a cup of warm milk with a teaspoon of honey before bedtime as a natural healing remedy.

Traditional Mexican healers have long used the medicinal properties of a teaspoon of raw honey in a cup of warm te de Manzanilla, or chamomile tea.

In general, the sleep-inducing qualities of honey have been known for years, and there are many variations of the remedies taken at bedtime. Yet, they all offer amazing benefits in the treatment of insomnia and drastically improve sleep quality.

Mike McInnis, a Scottish pharmacist, researcher, and author, claims that honey when taken before bedtime, boosts and lengthens restorative sleep by minimum three mechanisms, as follows:

  • Regulates blood sugar
  • Ensures adequate liver glycogen stores for 8 hours of sleep
  • Supports the release of melatonin, which is essential for the recovery and rebuilding of body tissues during rest.

McInnes coins a term for this honey-insulin-melatonin cycle or HYMN cycle.

— The glucose from the honey passes from the gut, through the liver, and enters the general circulation creating a mild glucose spike.

— The elevated blood sugar stimulates a controlled insulin release from the pancreas

— Insulin drives tryptophan into the brain.

— It gets converted into serotonin, that relaxes the body and mind.

-Serotonin is then turned into melatonin in the pineal gland

-Melatonin lowers body temperature and activates sleep. Moreover, it prevents the additional release of insulin from the pancreas, and thus prevents rapid sugar spikes in the blood.

-melatonin stimulates the release of the growth hormone, that is in charge of the recovery physiology.

— The recovery hormones start the repairing and rebuilding process of the bones and other body tissues

— Melatonin improves memory by stimulating the formation of neural cell adhesion molecules during REM sleep.

— At the same time, the liver converts the fructose moiety of honey into glucose, and then to liver glycogen, and the brain gets the needed glucose for the following night.

— Fructose triggers the release of glucokinase from the hepatocyte nuclei and thus regulates the uptake of glucose.

-The proper supply of liver glycogen inhibits the release of stress hormones.
