Supporters of Kate Middleton are accusing Meghan Markle of stealing the Duchess of Cambridge’s mental health campaign. The hullaballoo started after Meghan and Prince Harry announced on Instagram that they would collaborate with Oprah Winfrey for a mental health documentary.
“We are excited to announce that the Duke of Sussex and Oprah Winfrey are partners, co-creators and executive producers on their forthcoming mental health series launching on Apple in 2020,” the announcement read. Prince Harry and Winfrey have reportedly been working together for months and are now excited to carry out the project on the global platform.
Kate’s supporters perceive Meghan’s project as too similar with the Duchess of Cambridge’s “Head Together” campaign. Prince Harry used to work with Prince William and Kate for the same cause, and the project was entirely the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s idea. This campaign was one of the factors that helped reduce the suicide rate in Paris in 2018.
Since the announcement, several supporters of Kate have accused Meghan and Prince Harry of being credit grabbers, pretending to be the instigators of the mental health campaign when it is not originally theirs. “This seems wrong, don’t think it was Harry’s idea,” one critic commented. “So sad @sussexroyal that is nowhere mentioned the name of Duchess Catherine as the initiator of tackling mental health,” another critic wrote.
According to royal journalist Carly Read, fans of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were not pleased with Prince Harry and Meghan’s project announcement as they felt they were stealing Prince William and Kate’s brainchild. “She and Prince William were strong advocates of mental health issues and tackling the stigma. Please give credit where is due Harry!!” a Kate’s supporter ranted.
Netizens are also criticizing the need for Prince Harry to collaborate with Winfrey, with some pointing out that “celebrities stick together” — referencing to Meghan and the TV presenter, who happen to be friends. “What’s happened to the group of ‘Heads Together’ with their RH’s of Cambridge??? That was low key & believable,” one Kate supporter commented.
The campaign-stealing issue comes on the heels of the rumored rift among the royal family’s “Fab Four.” Last month, the Sussexes and Cambridges split courts as Prince Harry and Meghan moved out of Kensington Palace.
