A lot will change when Prince Charles becomes King of England. And while his ascension could be years away, the royal family has been busy prepping and planning to ensure a smooth transition. One of the things they have likely already considered is whether or not Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles will move into Buckingham Palace full time. And, if they do, will Prince William and Kate Middleton move to Clarence House?
Considered the royal family headquarters, Buckingham Palace is not only where the Mountbatten-Windsors conduct their business, its where certain members — including the monarch — reside. In her old age, Queen Elizabeth II spends a lot of her time with Prince Philip at Windsor Castle. However, Buckingham Palace is still her full-time residence — just like it was for those monarchs that came before Her Majesty.
Will Prince Charles move to Buckingham Palace?
At the time of his ascension, Prince Charles could slowly begin to make the transition to the Buckingham Palace living quarters. However, the official royal residence is currently under massive renovation, which is forcing some royals to move out. The queen will also need to vacate but, according to the Buckingham Palace renovation plans, that won’t need to happen until 2025.
So, while Buckingham Palace could serve as the Prince of Wales’s future home, he most likely won’t move in until after the renovations — at least in the queen’s current living quarters — are complete.
Will Prince William and Kate Middleton move to Clarence House?
If Prince Charles ascends the throne before renovations are completed, he will probably remain at his current official residence, Clarence House. But, if he vacates for the royal family headquarters, Prince William and Kate Middleton could move in.
That said, Clarence House has nothing to do with royal ranking — meaning it’s not the official residence of all heirs to the British throne (just Prince Charles). Before Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles moved in, the house was occupied by the Queen Mother, aka Prince Charles’s grandmother. Prince Charles and Princess Diana lived at Kensington Palace, just like Prince William and Kate Middleton do.
Chances are, Prince William and Kate Middleton probably won’t move to Clarence House, as Prince Charles doesn’t exactly want to give up his home sweet home. According to reports, the reason for staying is about more than the Buckingham Palace renovation. The Prince of Wales allegedly wants to open Buckingham Palace to the public for longer periods of time (right now, royal fans can only visit between July and October) and already has plans for a special tribute exhibition on his mother’s historical reign.
Prince Charles also feels Buckingham Palace is too big for him and Camilla. “I know he is no fan of ‘the big house,’ as he calls the palace,” a source told Hello! Magazine. “He doesn’t see it as a viable future home or a house that’s fit for purpose in the modern world. He feels its upkeep, both from a cost and environmental perspective, is not sustainable,” they added.
